At the end of the day\, take your compass home along with new confidence in your wayfinding skills! \nAbout your instructor: Tyler Arboretum Educator Erin Conway might not be able to remember road names\, but after a season of helping lost hikers in Maine’s backcountry\, she’s confident she can teach you how to find your way around Tyler’s 650 acres. Just don’t ask her which highway to take to get here! \n\n\nWhat to expect:   \n\n\n\nRain or shine. In the event of dangerous conditions (i.e.\, thunderstorms)\, an alternative version of the class will be held indoors\, and you can return at a later date to try the outdoor courses.\nMeet at the Visitor Center.\nHike up to 1.5 miles to reach and complete all the courses\, the more difficult of which will be off-trail.\nSeveral smaller courses will be set for the youngest wayfinders.\nThis is not a stroller-friendly program; if you are bringing a child ages 2 and under\, please use a carrier.\n\nWhat to bring: \n\n\n\nDress for the weather. \nSturdy shoes and long pants for walking off-trail\n\nPRE-REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED.  Please note: This program is designed for children ages 5+\, but feel free to bring younger siblings.  No need to register children 4 and under. Younger children will likely need a helping hand while sharing an adult’s compass.

DESCRIPTION:The Philadelphia area has a long tradition of natural history illustration going back to Charles Wilson Peale’s natural history museum and the establishment of first art school in the country –The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. Continuing this naturalistic tradition\, we are offering a unique opportunity to experience our historical farm family via a beginner animal drawing workshop. Guided by an experienced artist you will be introduced to a variety of techniques\, sources of inspiration and suggestions for structuring your own drawing practice. \n  \nInstructor Bio: \nBeth Haebel is a visual artist who has exhibited in juried shows and galleries in the area. She has been a volunteer at Colonial Farmstead for over ten years and has recently turned her attention to creating naturalistic paintings the animals who live and work at our farm. DESCRIPTION:Creating fabric and clothing in colonial Pennsylvania took many steps and many specialized tools. Come experience how some of those tools were used and how much work went into making the clothing that people wore every day. Try your hand at spinning wool using handheld drop spindles. \nEva Mergen has studied modern and historic textile production most of her life. She learned to sew as a child and got her first spinning wheel at 16. From there she delved into the history of textile production going all the way back to pre-history and all the way up to the industrial revolution. She got her Masters degree in Experimental Archaeology\, which is the study of how items we made and used in the past. \n

DESCRIPTION:Baskets were essential in the colonial period for gathering\, marketing\, and everyday household tasks; an indispensable tool in both town and farm life. Led by instructor\, Karen Wychock\, participants will create a square storage basket using traditional techniques. \nMeasuring 10” x 10” x 11\,” the basket features bushel basket handles and oak runners to support whatever it holds. You can choose to weave it natural or add color to create a pattern – the choice is yours! Whether you are a novice or an advanced weaver\, this basket will make the perfect addition to your home. \nAll materials are provided. Attendees are asked to bring an apron or towel\, as the reed will be worked wet.
