SUMMARY:PAC Center: Rotary Arts Conversation with Sculptor & Ceramic Artist Syd Carpenter
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an in-depth discussion with sculptor and ceramic artist Syd Carpenter. \nIn a career spanning 50 years\, Carpenter started off as a clay artist before evolving to mixed media installation. Much of her work in the last two decades has focused on the relationship between the land and African American farmers and gardeners. \nCarpenter was a professor of Studio Art at Swarthmore College for 30 years before retiring in 2022. She is now a Professor Emerita of Studio Art and holds the Endowed Peggy Chan Professorship of Black Studies. \nHer work is in the collections of numerous museums\, including the Philadelphia Museum of Art; the University of Illinois; Canton Ohio Museum of Art; Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian Institute; and in numerous private collections. \nHer awards and fellowships include a Pew Fellowship in the Arts; Leeway Foundation Grants\, National Endowment for the Arts and the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts Fellowships. \nShe is currently working as an independent artist in Philadelphia\, continuing to exhibit nationally and internationally. \nA wine-and-cheese reception follows the discussion. Tickets are $10. Walk-ins are welcome as space permits.

DESCRIPTION:Acrylic Painting Workshop \nLearn how to create depth and atmosphere in an acrylic landscape by using a variety of green tones to distinguish distant backgrounds\, a middle ground\, and a strong foreground. This class will explore techniques for building a sense of space and bringing a scene to life through color and composition. Our subject is the beloved Swing Tree along Crum Creek on Yale Avenue. For many years\, local children enjoyed swinging from a rope attached to the long\, slanted branch of this iconic sycamore tree that grew along the creek bank. Although that famous branch is no longer there\, its memory lives on in this charming and picturesque scene. \nJoin us as we capture the beauty and nostalgia of this local landmark in acrylic paint\, creating a lasting tribute to a treasured piece of community history.

DESCRIPTION:Acrylic Painting Workshop \nDuring the late 1950s\, a group of 26 African American artists became known as the The Florida Highwaymen. Traveling along Florida’s East Coast highways\, they sold their vibrant landscape paintings wherever they could—along roadsides\, in parking lots\, and by going door-to-door to local businesses. Despite facing racial barriers of the era\, they were remarkably prolific and built successful careers selling their artwork for about $20 per painting. Today\, their works are highly sought after and can be worth thousands of dollars\, making them an important part of Florida’s artistic and cultural history. \nThis class pays tribute to their distinctive style and lasting legacy while giving participants the opportunity to create their own Highwaymen-inspired landscape painting. \nAll supplies are included.

DESCRIPTION:This event best suited for families with children ages 2–12. \nA celebration of Mexico through dance\, music\, and tradition. \nCelebrate Dia de los Muertos and Hispanic Heritage Month at PAC this October! The Family Live Arts Cultural Series kick off its 5th Season with Danza Folclórica Tonantzin\, a children’s Mexican Folkloric Dance group led by artistic director Pamela Plata. \nThis “Day of the Dead” holiday invites audiences to experience more than a performance – an encounter with the memory\, identity\, and the roots of Mexico. Through colorful dances\, music\, and traditional costumes\, the group bring to life the powerful expressions of their cultural heritage. The stage will become a journey through different regions of Mexico\, from the vibrant rhythms of Sinaloa to the unmistakable sounds of Jalisco\, where each dance reveals its diversity and history. \nSpecial guest artist\, singer and musician Victoria Juárez\, will perform “La Llorona” a heartfelt interpretation of one of Mexico’s most iconic and enduring songs as well as “Azul” accompanying herself on the Jarana\, an 8 stringed guitar shaped instrument from the southern region of the state of Veracruz. Special food tastes\, make and take craft and other activities fill out this interactive and educationally enriching program for the whole family. \nABOUT \nDia de los Muertos or “Day of the Dead\,” originates in Mexico and is a vibrant holiday celebrated annually on October 31 and November 1 and 2. It honors deceased loved ones through joyful family reunions\, colorful altars\, favorite foods\, music\, and bright marigolds. \nFor families\, Día de los Muertos is more than a time to remember those who have passed—it is a celebration of the love\, stories\, traditions\, and cultural heritage they have passed on. Through these joyful traditions\, families honor their roots and help younger generations understand where they come from\, take pride in their cultural identity\, preserve and carry their heritage forward. \n“Tonantzin” symbolizes Mexican heritage\, Indigenous roots\, motherhood\, strength\, community\, and the preservation of culture through art\, dance\, and education. \nBIO \nPamela Plata s a community leader and folkloric dance instructor dedicated to working with children and youth in Philadelphia’s Mexican and Latin American communities. She is the founder and director of the dance group Danza Folclórica Tonantzin\, who have performed in the Mummer’s Parade and at the Kimmel Center. Plata has created a space where cultural identity\, discipline\, and artistic expression come together. Her experience as both a performer and instructor has shaped her teaching style\, which emphasizes respect\, responsibility\, and pride in cultural traditions. She remains committed to bringing new ideas\, innovative cultural choreographies\, and meaningful community-based performances to inspire audiences of all ages and bring them closer to the richness and beauty of Mexican folkloric traditions\, ensuing they continue to thrive for future generations.
