SUMMARY:Brandywine Museum of Art: "Treasures from the Family: The Gift of Betsy James Wyeth."
DESCRIPTION:Discover Betsy James Wyeth’s role as the curator and archivist of the Wyeth family’s rich history and collections in “Treasures from the Family: The Gift of Betsy James Wyeth.” The exhibition consists of art and archival material from the major bequest she left to the Brandywine Museum of Art upon her death in 2020. \nAndrew and Betsy Wyeth were long-time supporters of the Museum. From its earliest days\, the Wyeths stepped in to ensure there would always be works of art in the galleries. Their role in transferring the N.C. Wyeth House and Studio\, and later\, the Andrew Wyeth Studio to the Museum’s care helped to transform the institution’s mission. The couple’s vision for the future led to the creation of the Museum’s Andrew and Betsy Wyeth Study Center\, which also stewards the collection of the Wyeth Foundation for American Art. In a final act of philanthropy\, Betsy Wyeth planned a major gift of artworks—beyond those by Andrew Wyeth—and the family’s rich trove of archival material to the Museum. \nTreasures highlights paintings held by the Wyeth family\, many of which were on loan to Brandywine for decades. Such paintings as N.C. Wyeth’s Self-Portrait with Palette (ca. 1909-1912) or his Captain Nemo (1918) have frequently hung in the galleries but will now make Brandywine their permanent home thanks to Betsy Wyeth’s planning. In addition to these familiar paintings\, other works in the bequest showcase moments in N.C. Wyeth’s career development such as a teenage self-portrait and his experiments with impressionist brushwork. Among the gems in the exhibition are examples of his early Western work that catapulted him to the top of the illustration field. \nWhile the bequest primarily contains the work of N.C. Wyeth\, other members of the family\, including Henriette\, Carolyn\, and Jamie Wyeth are represented as well. In their lifetimes\, Andrew and Betsy enjoyed the work of Howard Pyle\, often making gifts of his paintings to one another\, and that passion is represented by several Pyle paintings in the exhibition. \nIn addition to guaranteeing the future care of the family’s art collection\, Betsy Wyeth ensured that her decades-long project of collecting and organizing the letters of N.C. Wyeth would be continued by the Brandywine’s Walter and Leonore Annenberg Research Center. Known officially as the “N.C. Wyeth Correspondence Collection of Betsy James Wyeth\,” the collection consists of thousands of letters\, photographs\, and other unique items that range from N.C.’s birth in 1882 through the condolence messages after his death in 1945. Betsy collected these letters from disparate sources\, catalogued them\, and published a selection in her book The Wyeths: The Letters of N.C. Wyeth\, 1901-1945. \nAn assortment of these highly personal family documents and keepsakes is included in the exhibition\, connecting the private lives of the Wyeths to the paintings\, many of which are well known to Brandywine visitors. Among these treasures is a valentine given by N.C. Wyeth to Carolyn Bockius in 1904\, before their marriage. A trove of family photographs\, most taken by N.C. Wyeth himself\, provides a glimpse of the talented Wyeth children as they grow up. His untimely death in 1945 shocked the family\, who rushed to preserve many special mementos which are also part of this collection. N.C. Wyeth’s last known correspondence with his son Andrew\, written weeks before his death in 1945\, will be included. \nTreasures not only represents Betsy Wyeth’s research on her family history\, but also her understanding that both the paintings and the archives work in tandem to create a fuller\, more contextual story of the Wyeths\, not only as a remarkable group of artists\, but as a family. Through her generosity\, Betsy Wyeth has entrusted Brandywine with the care of art works and her collected family history\, which will now be publicly accessible for both enjoyment and scholarship in perpetuity.

SUMMARY:Brandywine Museum of Art: John Sloan’s Street Theater
DESCRIPTION:In the early twentieth century\, John Sloan emerged as a key figure of the Ashcan School\, a group of artists focused on portraying the unvarnished realities of modern life in New York City. \nA painter and printmaker\, Sloan worked in oil and etching to depict the urban environment around him\, adopting both the loose brushwork of his fellow modernists in his paintings and a more intricate style to capture intimate studies of everyday life in his prints. Selected from a collection of over 500 prints donated to the Brandywine Museum of Art by the late Paul Preston Davis\, the more than 50 works in John Sloan’s Street Theater survey the American artist’s output in this medium. \nAn inveterate people-watcher\, Sloan recorded activities across the social spectrum\, often making pointed class comparisons while providing a window into a time of technological\, political\, and cultural change: horse-drawn carriages gave way to automobiles\, Prohibition came and went\, and women’s roles evolved\, with the emergence of the flapper and a class of young\, independent professionals. Sloan also depicted the excitement of children growing up in the city\, seemingly surrounded by endless adventures. Through a variety of street scenes\, these remarkable prints invite visitors to experience urban life in early twentieth-century New York City through the artist’s eyes.

SUMMARY:Brandywine Museum of Art Presents: Cropsey\, Wyeth\, and the American Landscape Tradition
DESCRIPTION:The Brandywine will premiere the first ever museum display of a monumental\, rediscovered masterwork by the leading Hudson River School artist Jasper Francis Cropsey (1823–1900). \nA stunning example of Gilded Age patronage\, Autumn in the Ramapo Valley\, Erie Railway of 1873\, has been in private British collections since it was commissioned the same year by Irish-American railroad magnate James McHenry. This major canvas changes our understanding of Jasper Francis Cropsey\, one of the iconic talents of American art. Almost seven feet in length\, Autumn in the Ramapo Valley\, Erie Railway is both a celebration of the American landscape and American industry. The train passing through the valley is a reference to the Erie Railroad\, in which McHenry had recently acquired a majority stake. Just after it was completed\, McHenry had the painting shipped to England where it remained until purchased in 2025 by the The J. Jeffrey and Ann Marie Fox Foundation for American Art. Seen by the public for the first time since 1873\, the painting will be at the heart of a special exhibition\, Cropsey\, Wyeth\, and the American Landscape Tradition\, which draws on the rich and varied holdings of the Brandywine Museum of Art and the Wyeth Foundation for American Art to provide a focused appraisal of the complex art of American landscape painting. \nAlongside this exceptional large-format Cropsey\, additional works by Cropsey\, Alfred Thompson Bricher\, Albert Bierstadt\, William Trost Richards\, John Frederick Kensett\, Mary Blood Mellen\, Martin Johnson Heade\, and more survey the nineteenth-century boom in landscape painting in the United States and the relationship to industry that was a key context at the heart of this movement. The exhibition continues the story with Cropsey’s afterlives. Through key works in the Brandywine and Wyeth Foundation collections\, a clear line of descent traces the further development of American landscape art\, via Homer\, Bellows\, and N.C. Wyeth to an especially rich flowering in the works of Andrew Wyeth (1917–2009). Documentation in the Wyeth family library and archives shows a depth of engagement with artists of the Hudson River School not previously recognized\, including specific lessons in composition\, allegory\, and the aesthetic potential of industry that Andrew Wyeth learned from paintings like Autumn in the Ramapo Valley. With a variety of works in watercolor and tempera\, some of which have never been exhibited before\, the story of the rich American landscape tradition continues and intriguing commonalities between the artists of the Hudson River School and Wyeth emerge.

SUMMARY:Brandywine Museum of Art: ABUNDANCE/EXCESS: A CONTEMPORARY EYE ON STILL LIFE
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition considers bounty\, accumulation\, and waste in 21st century American culture through the work of 10 contemporary artists\, including Kate Abercrombie\, Sungho Bae\, Katie Butler\, Ilana Harris-Babou\, artist collaborators Nadia Hironaka and Matthew Suib\, King Cobra\, Tamara Kostianovsky\, sTo Len\, Cara Romero\, and Misha Wyllie. The exhibition will be on view at the Brandywine from March 15 through June 7\, 2026. \nStill life\, at its core\, is the artistic depiction of things\, which is explored through a contemporary lens in more than 45 works across a variety of mediums\, ranging from paintings to sculptures to mixed media and video. The works included in Abundance/Excess frequently reflect each artists’ cultural attitude toward that which they acquire\, consume\, and live amongst. Many of the artworks in the exhibition utilize the same subject matter as historic still lifes\, with flowers\, fruit\, meat\, fish\, matches\, and skulls making frequent appearances. The artists also revisit conceptual tropes and techniques from historic still life including decaying food\, indications of the passage of time\, and symbolic juxtapositions to consider where wealth comes from\, who holds it\, and how we find and create it in our own lives.
