Tyler Arboretum: Spring Workshop: DIY Charcoal

March 8 @ 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm

FOR ADULTS AND YOUNG ARTISTS AGES 12-17

Gather, make, and learn to use artist-quality charcoal crafted from local materials! While you wait for your charcoal to bake, learn the basic techniques of using charcoal by drawing a nature-inspired piece, step-by-step.

About your instructor: Tyler Arboretum Lead Educator Erin Conway has made all the mistakes crafting and using charcoal, so you don’t have to!

What to expect:

  • Rain or shine, we will move under cover/inside if needed
  • Max 1-mile hike over uneven but level terrain
  • Arrive early to check in at the Visitor Center and enjoy the 5-minute walk to the Edible Garden Classroom.
  • Your charcoal might not be ready to take home by the end of the workshop (it has to cool!), so plan to spend time exploring Tyler after the class or pick your charcoal up at the Visitor Center another day during open hours.

What to bring:

  • Dress for the weather.
  • Shoes suitable for walking
  • Charcoal can be difficult to wash out of some fabrics — wear clothes you don’t mind getting messy.
