Delco’s Best Dive Bars, Round 2

Delco’s Best Dive Bars, Round 2 Overview

Is there anything better than tucking into a comfy booth in a dark, cozy dive bar, ideally with a pitcher of cold beer, a crew of friends and a game on the TV? In Delco, this is one of our favorite pastimes, and we think we do dive bars better than anyone else.

You don’t have to look hard to find time-honored, locally owned pubs and taverns across the county — we’re talking about places where you can find folks from all walks of life, elbow to elbow de-stressing after a long day, dissecting the latest Eagles game and singing along to jukebox classics.

In fact, there are so many fantastic dive bars in Delco, that we have to cover them in three rounds (don’t miss Delco’s Best Dive Bars, Round 1). And, please don’t get it twisted: To us “dive bar” is a compliment of the highest order, a phrase synonymous with friendly service, affordable prices and neighborhood vibes!

Mickey’s Tavern is the definition of a great corner bar: It’s been around for decades and is staffed by longtime bartenders who will remember your name and your order. There is no shortage of domestic drafts, bottles and shots, but also some great craft beers on offer. Though the food menu is limited, the locals rave about the hot dogs! Pair one with a discounted draft during happy hour (Weekdays from 4 to 6 p.m), or fuel up before weekly karaoke. Mickey’s is open seven days a week, from 10 a.m. to 2 a.m.

129 S. State Rd. Upper Darby; (610) 352-9760.

Even as Havertown’s dining scene has evolved to include more trendy establishments, Burke’s Inn has held its own on Eagle Road. Established in 1939, it’s the town’s oldest family-owned bar! It’s the sort of spot where old high school friends gather over the holidays to reconnect and shoot a few rounds of pool or shuffleboard. It also hosts a blowout St. Patty’s Day party every year! There’s no food, but plenty of icy beer and made-to-order mixed drinks.

25 E. Eagle Rd., Havertown; (610) 789-1668.

If you enjoy a dive bar with a packed events calendar, check out John Morton’s Tavern, a relaxed dive with a small town feel. From live music to 90’s trivia to DJ dance parties to bingo night to game-day specials, there’s always something going down! Whenever you go, be sure to come hungry so you can try its legendary roast beef and roast pork sandwiches. Or, stop by for weekend brunch, served on both Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. — the bloody mary is another must-try!

400 Lincoln Ave., Prospect Park; (610) 237-7130.

The kitchen at Sundance Saloon has recently gotten a refresh (it’s now called Smokey Joe’s Kitchen at Sundance Saloon), and features shareable, bar-friendly bites, like homemade eggrolls, wings and mozzarella sticks, alongside more chef-driven plates and entrees, such as grilled jerk salmon, jumbo shrimp and cheese ravioli and chicken cordon bleu. After dinner, settle in for the evening to catch some sports on TV, listen to live music or join in the karaoke fun. On a nice night, check out the outdoor patio for a chill atmosphere.

3531 Concord Rd., Aston Township; (610) 494-9725.

Monaghan’s Pub is a welcoming community-oriented pub where there’s always something going on! Stop in midday to check out the weekly lunch specials, or enjoy discounted Yuenlings and dollar wings during Phils games! There are events most nights of the week, including DJs, music-themed bingo, quizzo and “name that tune”-trivia. The bar offers familiar favorites on draft which pair perfectly with the comfort food-focused menu. The Guiness stew, shepherds pie and cheesesteaks all get top-notch reviews from locals and visitors alike! Monaghan’s is just 10 minutes from the Philadelphia airport, so it’s a great stop when you’re headed out or coming back into town.

414 Powhatten Ave., Essington; (610) 595-0303.
