Eggs, Bacon, Mimosas — Oh My! Where to Find Blissful Brunch in Delco

A relaxed brunch is one of the ultimate small pleasures. Where else can you find your favorite breakfast and lunch foods with creative, decadent twists, steaming mugs of coffee, and an adult beverage or…two? There’s truly no better way to catch up with friends, celebrate a special occasion or say “cheers” to the weekend.

Brunch may seem like a modern invention, but according to some food historians this midday feast may have its roots in England’s 19th-century hunt breakfasts — lavish multi-course meals that featured a smorgasbord of goodies, such as chicken livers, eggs, meats, bacon, fresh fruit and sweets. Others surmise that Sunday brunch derives from the practice of Catholics fasting before mass and then sitting down for a large midday meal.

Regardless of where it came from, brunch is here to stay. And there are so many great spots to find brunch in Delco! While you may think of this indulgent meal as being a Sunday ritual, some local restaurants and cafes also serve brunch on Saturdays and weekdays, too!

Really: Can you have too much brunch?

The Fainting Goat

This cute gastropub does not hold back when it comes to brunch (served both Saturday and Sunday each week). Every dish has a fun touch or detail that takes it over the top—being a little bit “extra” is an important part of brunch! Start the meal off with a creamsicle mimosa or a French toast martini, and then make the difficult choice of what to order for your meal. Prefer a sweet bite? The creme brulee donut or apple pie French toast may be calling to you. On the savory side, try the Goat Avocado Toast, topped with goat cheese, fresh avocado, bacon and eggs, or the chicken and waffles, complete with maple syrup and gravy. Bonus: There’s a spacious beer garden out back for al fresco dining, and a kids’ menu, too!

Avenue Kitchen

The Avenue Kitchen may call it “breakfast,” but one look at the menu and it’s clear: there are brunch vibes aplenty. There’s so much more than eggs and toast here—think: brioche French toast with strawberries and whipped cream, short rib benedict on sourdough with velvety hollandaise, build-your-own omelets, pillowy buttermilk biscuits and so much more. Wake up with a cup of La Colombe coffee or a creamy latte, or explore the excellent bar menu, including bacon bloody marys, seasonal sangria, spicy margaritas, and so much more. There are plenty of non-alcoholic options, as well.  Gluten-free diners will be happy to see wheat-free pancakes, French toast and sandwich buns on offer! Breakfast is served every day starting at 8 a.m.

Towne & Country Cafe

Comfy and non-pretentious (so perfectly Delco), Towne & Country Cafe brings a homemade feel to morning comfort food favorites. Slices of eggy quiche, banana and Nutella-stuffed French toast, creamed chipped beef, Greek omelets, corn muffins slathered with butter—there is a lot to choose from! There are plenty of options for little brunchers, and tasty lunch dishes, too (Towne & Country is one of our top local spots for soup!). The rustic, cottage-themed decor and friendly, quick service are the cherry on top! Breakfast kicks off at 7 a.m. every day.

Kettle Cafe

Kettle Cafe is situated at a bustling corner in Havertown, and on any given day, it’s packed with locals of all ages enjoying delicious, elevated brunch dishes. Hefty breakfast burritos, smoked salmon bagels, Kettle Rancheros and the Brookline Bully Burger are just a few customer favorites. For a taste of the kitchen’s creativity, check out the daily specials board, for limited-time offerings, like steak and eggs, vegan Buddah bowls, and carrot cake pancakes. The atmosphere is lively, with shady outdoor seating and welcoming staff who are happy to help with any questions or special requests! They open Monday through Wednesday at 8 a.m., and at 7 a.m. Friday through Sunday.

Bierhaul

The kitchen at this European-style beer garden may be known for its craft brew-friendly bites, like German pretzels, gourmet pizzas and loaded sandwiches, but they also do Sunday brunch extremely well. We’re talking hot honey fried chicken with cornbread waffles, make-your-own frittatas, and Irish brekkie sando, and much more. A full bar means a multitude of beers and cocktails to choose from. Bierhaul is open Tuesday and Wednesday from noon to 11 p.m., Thursday through Saturday from noon to midnight, and Sunday from noon to 9 p.m. Brunch is only served Sundays from noon to 4 p.m.

Terrain Garden Cafe

This elegant cafe does brunch in maximum style. Sip refreshing non-alcoholic drinks, like a raspberry matcha latte, or an orange turmeric sunrise, or try something boozy from the bar. We like the grapefruit bourbon sour and the strawberry rhubarb mimosa. For the table, try the garlic hummus board with veggies and lavash, then spring for the wild mushroom frittata, the spicy shakshuka, or the brioche French toast with vanilla custard and macerated berries. No matter what you order, the house-cut fries are a must (absolutely add truffle pecorino!). Really hungry? You win with the Terrain burger, Pennsylvania Angus beef, Cabot Creamery white cheddar and sweet balsamic onion jam. Brunch is served until 4 p.m. every day.

914 Baltimore Pike, Glen Mills, (610) 459-6030.

The BrickHaus

This is one of our go-to brunch stops seven days a week! Top picks are the breakfast burrito stuffed with scrambled eggs, black beans and Monterey Jack cheese served with salsa and sour cream, the Franconia French toast with caramelized cinnamon sugar apples and Alex’s all-American cheeseburger, Lancaster County grass-fed beef topped generously with American cheese, lettuce, tomato and pickles on a country bun (add a fried egg to further brunch-ify it). Breakfast and lunch are served all day, every day (8 a.m.-2 p.m. on weekdays, 8 a.m.-3 p.m. on weekends).

White Dog Cafe

Its sister (and original) restaurant in Philly put farm-to-table on the map well before farm-to-table was a thing. The tradition continues at White Dog Cafe’s Wayne and Glen Mills locations with locally sourced brunch favorites. Depending on the season, you may find savory Kennett Square mushroom soup or a Lancaster County omelet, with Green Meadow Farm smoked bacon, goat cheese, spinach, and oven dried tomatoes. Veggie-lovers will enjoy the beet and arugula salad featuring Shellbark Hollow Farm goat cheese, or the falafel burger with tzatziki, sprouts, red onion and mixed greens. Pair these garden-fresh bites with creative cocktails featuring regional purveyors. Brunch is served on Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m.-2:30 p.m.

200 W. Lancaster Ave., Wayne, (610) 225-3700; 981 Baltimore Pike, Glen Mills; (610) 822-2100.
